IT & TELECOMMUNICATIONS

FACTS

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, digital development practically overtook itself, especially in 2020 and 2021. The temporary cancellation of face-to-face events and the adoption of teleworking arrangements as well as virtual trade fairs, meetings and conferences accelerated the deployment and use of digital communications and information media.

As Germany's digital capital, Frankfurt am Main boasts the world's largest internet exchange and the second-highest density of data centres in Europe. These are just two of the many good reasons why data centres and companies with high digital infrastructure requirements are choosing to locate in the Rhine-Main region.

DEMAND IS GROWING, AND SO IS THE NETWORK

Hesse continues to expand its digital infrastructure. More than 50 percent of Germany's capacity in colocation data centres – the accommodation of IT equipment at an external location – is located in Hesse alone. In the midst of it all beats the heart of digitisation: Frankfurt am Main . As one of the most important locations for data centres in Europe, Frankfurt provides the necessary framework and capacity for storing, managing and processing huge amounts of data. The DE-CIX internet exchange in the east of Frankfurt reported a new data throughput record of 14.68 Tbit/s peak in April 2023.

FACTS AS THE BASIS FOR FUTURE PLANS

The demand for space, electricity and the sustainable operation of data centres is an issue that also concerns us as a business development agency, especially in the Frankfurt metropolitan region. Working with external partners, our aim is to analyse the impact of data centre relocations with regard to centralised locations such as Frankfurt as well as trends towards decentralisation. We also provide free support for new companies in Frankfurt am Main when it comes to dealing with municipal authorities and authorisation processes.

Frankfurt am Main has carved out an outstanding position for itself as Germany's telecommunications hub and a European centre for internet traffic and services. Over 100 leading national and international telephone companies have branch offices here and provide the basis for an exceptional, forward-looking digital infrastructure. In Europe, Frankfurt am Main is the location with the second-highest density of data centres and – in terms of data flow – the largest internet hub in the world according to TeleGeography.

DE-CIX, Germany's most important internet exchange and the world's largest and most reliable data hub is located here. Several thousand kilometres of fibre optic lines run through the city. Companies based in Frankfurt have the infrastructure they require to operate successfully in a globally interconnected economy.

Major stakeholders are working hand in hand to create high-performance communication networks. The city realised early on that information and telecommunications (TC) technology would be a key driver and developed it with a view to the future.

Back in 1995, even before the German telecommunications market was deregulated, Frankfurt am Main took a non-bureaucratic approach and gave private telecommunications companies the opportunity to lay their own fibre optic cables in the city's streets and create a first-class network in Frankfurt am Main. Companies based in Frankfurt have the infrastructure they require to operate successfully in a globally interconnected economy.
